Maya Angelou receives Presidential Medal of Freedom

Posted by in Award News, Virago

We’re delighted to see that one of our truly wonderful Virago authors, Maya Angelou, author of I Know Why The Caged Bird Sings was given the Presidential Medal of Freedom this week by President Barack Obama.

Angelou, 82, is one of the most renowned and influential voices of our time. Hailed as a global renaissance woman, Angelou is a celebrated poet, memoirist, novelist, educator, dramatist, producer, actress, historian, filmmaker, and civil rights activist. It is not her first presidential event either: Clinton requested that she compose a poem to read at his inauguration in 1993. Her recitation of her poem "On the Pulse of Morning" was broadcast around the world. Just like one of her most famous poems, she is a `Phenomenal Woman’ and we are very proud of her.
