Stephenie Meyer Q&A
Posted by Emily Rowland in Interviews
To celebrate the publication of The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner on 5 June (at 5:05am!), Stephenie Meyer answers all about Bree!
Have you been wondering how the publication of The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner came about? How did the novella influence the movie? What happened when Stephenie found out that her 'short' story was almost 200 pages? We've got your answers here!
Q&A with Stephenie Meyer:
Bree only appears in a couple pages of Eclipse. What was it about the character that made you want to explore her story further?
Stephenie: In the beginning, I wasn't fascinated specifically by Bree – it was the newborns in general. While I was writing Eclipse, there was a lot going on behind the scenes, of course, things Bella didn't know about. Because I was focused on Bella, I couldn't delve too deeply into the newborns' story, however, there was always in my mind a general idea of what they were up to. I had to think about that while I was pacing the plot: Bella is at this point, the newborns are doing this. To keep it all straight, eventually I made a calendar of the months of May and June – which is all Eclipse deals with – and wrote down on each square what was going on with Bella that day and what was happening in Seattle. So the story of the newborns was always a big part of the story of Eclipse. And it made me kind of sad that there was no way to express any of that in the book.
Bree is the only newborn mentioned by name in Eclipse, the only newborn who has contact with the Cullens (aside from being killed by them), and the only newborn who encounters the Volturi in the clearing. She lives the longest, so she is the narrator who can tell the full story. She was a natural choice to chronicle the story of the newborns. Once I started writing from her perspective, she really came alive. So much so that, as the inevitable end got closer, it was really depressing going ahead. It was harder for me to kill Bree than any other fiction character I've ever killed, even though I was killing her for the second time. (Before Bree, the saddest was Walter in The Host.)
At what point did you realize that the 'short story' you were working on for The Twilight Saga: The Official Guide was going to be a separate book?
Stephenie: I didn't realize my 'short' story was a novella until I handed it into my publisher. All I knew was that it was 80,000 words less than most of my novels. I was surprised when I was told it was almost 200 pages long and couldn't fit into the Guide. However, I had always wished that people would be able to read Bree's story before the movie came out. So when I was approached by the idea of publishing it as a standalone novella, it seemed like a great opportunity.
Why do you feel it is important for people to read Bree's story prior to the release of the Eclipse movie?
Stephenie: Eclipse is told from only Bella's perspective. That has some limitations; when there is so much going on off-stage (so to speak), it leaves a lot of mysteries. The films have the advantage of seeing the story from outside of Bella's head. The viewer can see things – like the wolves hunting Victoria in New Moon – that the reader only gets hints of. Of all the Twilight books, Eclipse has the most going on outside of Bella's view. For the movie to work, we have to see and understand some of these things.
Knowing that elements of Bree's story were being incorporated into the movie, I hoped the story could somehow get out first. Personally, I always want to read a book before seeing the movie. I like to make my own mental pictures before someone else's picture intrudes. Probably most of my readers don't have the same hang up, but for those who do, I wanted to give them the chance to create their own mental pictures of Bree and the gang.
How did the story in the novella influence the Eclipse movie?
Stephenie: Around the time I started working on the story for the Guide, Melissa Rosenberg, the screenplay writer for the Twilight movies, began work on the Eclipse movie. She came to me with a ton of questions about what was going on in Seattle. Because the movie wasn't tied to Bella's perspective the way the book was, she was free to explore the newborns, but she wanted to keep it consistent with the story in my head. I told her about the piece of Bree's story I'd written, and she was very excited to see it. Her enthusiasm was contagious, and I started really focusing on that story. By the time pre-production had begun on the Eclipse movie, the Bree story was finished. I sent it to the David Slade, the director, and he asked if I would also let the actors involved in the newborn's part of the movie read it. Of course I said yes.
So the novella wasn't responsible for there being scenes about the newborns in the Eclipse movie, but it was responsible for those scenes matching up somewhat with the story in my head. Hopefully it also gave Xavier, Bryce, and Jodelle some extra insight into their characters.
We know Bree dies before we begin the story. How did it feel to explore the Twilight universe from a darker angle?
Stephenie: At first I thought it would be fun. I was focused more on the plot than on the character – very rare for me – and I was looking forward to spending time with some real vampire-y vampires. I had a lot of scenes of destruction in my head that I wanted to get down on paper. But as I started looking at those scenes through Bree's eyes, the character started to become more important than the fun destruction. The more I fell in love with Bree and her friends, the more heartbreaking it felt to go forward. It ended up feeling dark in an entirely different way than I expected.
What was it like writing from a different Twilight character's point of view? Did it cause you to see anything about Eclipse/the previous novels differently?
Stephenie: This is the third time I've written from the perspective of a Twilight character other than Bella – I've also written from Edward's and Jacob's perspectives. All three times, this has felt really natural; when I write from Bella's perspective, I always know the thoughts of the other characters involved, I just don't get to share them. So it's fun for me to let those other voices out. One of the things that I enjoy most when writing from another perspective is looking at the characters I already know through new eyes. Things really came together when I got to the clearing with Bree. I loved being able to describe Bella and the Cullen's from her perception.
In Breaking Dawn, Bella feels what it's like to be a newborn and now readers will get to see Bree do the same. Were you thinking about Bella's experience while writing Bree's, or vice versa?
Stephenie: Absolutely – I was always comparing the two in my head as I wrote, because they have very different experiences as newborns. Bella goes into her new vampire life with a ton of preparation, expectation, and stubborn determination. Bree didn't have any idea of what was happening to her; she goes in blind. But both do exceptionally well given their circumstances. I imagine Bella's behavior would have been very similar to Bree's if she had been changed in a similar way.
Over the course of the Twilight Saga, we are introduced to a rich hierarchy of vampires. Is Bree the only vampire outside of the core Twilight cast you've established such a firm story for? Is there any other character you would enjoy exploring in a similarly involved way?
Stephenie: Given all the time in the world and no distractions, I could write a short story for every one of my characters; some would turn into novellas and some would turn into novels and some would turn into series. Some of the stories are pretty firm – Aro's early days for example, Marcus and Didyme, Jane and Alec, Charlotte and Peter, Alistair, the Denalis – and some I haven't given as much thought to. Most of these stories don't feel as necessary as Bree's, because Bree's story affects the central story so directly. I don't know that I'll ever do a companion story like this again. It was a lot of fun, though.
Was it easier or more difficult to write about the Twilight universe after seeing it brought to life in a movie?
Stephenie: All of the core Twilight story was written before the first movie came out, so I can't really say. The movies are a fun and interesting supplement to the books, but they've never affected the look of the story in my head.
In which order would you recommend one read The Twilight Saga with the addition of The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner? Should they follow Eclipse with the novella or finish Breaking Dawn before cracking the pages of The Short Second Life of Bree Tanner?
Stephenie: If I were going to read the Saga for the first time, I would probably read Bella's story straight through before launching into other perspectives.

Thanks for the Q&A, its good to get background on books and characters. However, will Stephenie be publishing Midnight Sun any time soon? I have just finished reading the partial draft on her website and loved it. I want more! It was so fascinating to read Twilight from Edward's point of view and see the anguish he went through deciding whether or not to pursue a relationship with Bella. Many thanks, Judith
Hi Judith! Thanks for getting in touch. I'm afraid Stephenie Meyer's website has the final word on Midnight Sun!
http://www.stepheniemeyer.com/midnightsun.html
Hey everybody,
I went to see Stephenie Meyers' site and it said that she will finish Midnight Sun. She wrote that she would write it after Breaking Dawn. Does anyone know if there's some news about Midnight sun? The latest updates so to speak?
thanx anyway
Hi Alice – Are you basing that on the June update on http://www.stepheniemeyer.com/midnightsun.html? If so, I'm afraid that was superseded by the August 28th post, which is definitely the final word on the matter.
Hi
Can you tell me if you will be publishing Breaking Dawn in the special red edged edition? If so when is this likely to be?
Many thanks
Hi J,
When Breaking Dawn is released in paperback on the 19th it'll be the with plain edges. But I know a bunch of people love their red edged editions and want to complete the set so we'll definitely be looking to do that again. Its not scheduled yet but maybe sometime next year :)
P.S. If you're excited about Breaking Dawn you should totally come over to http://www.atombooks.net – we're having lots of competitions in the run up to release later this month!
Hi! Please join the cause on facebook!!!
Join Stephenie Meyer to finish Midnight sun!!!
Please, we need a lot of members, apperantly she said she will finish the book if she saw that people wanted her to!
Please, Ms Meyer, I have never in my 45 years enjoyed the Twilight series as much as any other book I have read. To not finish Midnight Sun is the worst tease in history. Its agony waiting for it to be published. I would love to review any material but please finish it. I am so excited about hearing Edwards version of the final fight with James especially when he realises he may be too late and hears Bella screaming. Please finish it. Thankyou
mmm
maybe if Edward ask her, using his crooked smile, she'll be willing to publish Midnight Sun. I'm sure he wants his story writen also!!
I was wondering where Bella got her temper from… seems like Stephanie is a little stuburn too! Although she is 100% right in been upset, 2 years seems more than enough for us to be grounded! Sheesh she is worst than Charlie!
Stephanie pleaaaseee!! We are suffering here!
Hi Stephenie,
Do you wanna be my sister, so you can write books for me? I love the Twilight Saga books they are sooo great. I have read them at least 4 times in the past 2 months and I will read them again and again. I have had a lot going on in my life and I find those books a perfect excape, to the world arond me. You would never guess what I'm doing now reading Twilight and Midnight Sun together to get Edwards side of the story. But I can't finish cause Midnight Sun in not finished (boo hoo). I would really love to know his side on all of Saga books. I….. I'm going to beg Plz… Plz… Plz… Finish writing from Edwards side. I know that some bad person did the wrong thing, but please don't make us suffer for that a#!.
After readin like 6 times the Twilight Saga, including the 12 chapters of Midnight Sun, I'm getting greedy, not only I want it published, but I also want to know Edward's pov in New Moon, while strugling leaving Bella, all the months he was away, when he realized Bella was alive. His inside during the competition for Bella's love in Eclipse, and of course all his suffering during Bella's pregnancy!!
I love Bella's point of view, but now I want MORE!!
Stephanie,
You have written a series of books that have people reading that haven't read for years and are so grateful that they are reading again. I am no one special I have no great pull, But I would like you to understand how important your books are to people. I was in a very bad place when your books came to me and as strange as it sounds they helped me feel hopeful. Everyone I've refered to read the series thinks I gave them book heroin, they cant get enough and blame me for telling them about the books in the first place. I read Midnight Sun when you posted it on your webpage, I can only imagine how betrayed you felt when it was stolen. If there was anything we could say to inspire you to write Edwards story, it would be just simply this: We Twilight fans have never enjoyed a series of books more untli you came along, we are ageless. You have inspired all ages to read and enjoy a beautiful story. I would only ask that you to please consider writing Midnight Sun for the fans that have never wavered from the loyalty that you and Twilight so deserves. We are as ever faithfully awaiting for the book we know you will finish. We love you !!!
Sorry Stephenie, I seem to have opened a can of worms asking about Midnight Sun, but you can see how many of your loyal readers would love you to finish writing and publish it. You will also note that not all your readers are teenagers, I am 51 and just love the Twilight series. I am trying to stop myself from reading them all for a third time!
Dear Stephanie I am a late commer to the twilight saga, but have made up for it, I bought all four books and read them within a week, I have purchased Twilight, New moon and seen Eclipse at the cinema, which amazed my family as I never go, too noisy I prefer to watch in the confort of my own home! I just wish it was out on DVD, and I wait with great anticipation for the Breaking dawn film or films, please hurry! I can feel the withdrawl symptoms already. However impatient that I am I noticed a tilte midnught sun Twilight Edward version, read your comments and then the pages you offered and I am hooked, please think about publishing it soon I love Edwards character I kept wondering about his side and this would just complete the picture. I know some people do not like your books, pity for them, I am just totally addicted as are many others. So put pen to paper and end our agony, let us read about Edward. after all we had a whole book of sorts on Jacob, in breaking dawn, and in my mind Edward definatley deserves his side telling, I agree with a previous comment not just twilight but them all, but for now twilight will do, hope to be reading soon.
Dear Stephanie, I too am a late comer to your books. I actually did things backwards I watched the first three movies before reading the books. I was reluctant to watch them as I never considered myself a fan I vampire stories. My family convinced me to watch them. I loved the movies and of course I bought all four of the books. I must say they were the best books I ever read. I am a mother of two, I work fulltime as nurse. My job is stressful. I find them such a release. The story and relationship between Bella and Edward is amazing. I to wish you would consider finishing midnight sun I would love to hear more about his feelings, I am sure they would be quite fascinating and addictive.
Hi
i know how very extremely busy you are with all this Twilight saga, however;I am asking you if you are gonna get the 2nd series of your Host book out anytime soon? I just cannot read any other books and I was in a horrible car accident a few years ago and had massive brain damage and one of the things my doctors want me to do to get my brain back up and running to as close as the state it was in is to read and do brain exercises, but esp.reading it helps with the re wiring it. Can you offer any of your favorites?
Thanks and God Bless you
Hi Folks –
Darren from Little,Brown here. Can I just point out – in case there's any confusion – that this isn't Stephenie Meyer's website. And, given what an incredibly busy lady she is, there's no chance at all that she's going to have time to read these comments…
Not that it isn't great to see all your enthusiastic feedback – always welcome! – but I just wanted to point out that you're not going to get a reply from Stephenie herself. so please don't be disappointed when that doesn't happen, okay?
All best,
DT
We know Darren, it just feels nice! thanks anyway!!
Hello
I will make this short and sweet and to the point. Will or have you been writing the 2nd series to The Host book any time soon if you have written it when do you think it will be published? I am so much looking forward to reading it. Please let your fans know something PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!
thanks
Henry Jensen
Hey,
I'm a really big fan of the twilight saga…actually Steph made sure I don't read anything else because when ever I start a book from somebody else I feel like I'm cheating…
anyway I wondered if I could ask something here…Is Steph working on something new? preferably within the Twilight universe…I know she don't want to hear about Midnight Sun and I don't mean that one but more like something else…
Anyway I hope we get something new in the twilight world because Bree's story was just to short, Steph could have written a thousand page book about her…
Hi guys, I'm the Atom editorial assistant – thanks for all your questions, we love to see how much readers love the Twilight Saga! Unfortunately, I don't have any news for you at the moment…the final word from Stephenie can be found on her own website http://www.stepheniemeyer.com
Rest assured that we'll make new announcements on the Atom website whenever there are any! Head to http://www.atombooks.net to have a look. There are lots of fantastic books on our list that you might like if you like the Twilight Saga :)
What made you choose little, brown books to publish your books? How do you send in your book drafts? I'm writting a book myself but i'm not sure which publishers are a good idea and how to go about it. Did you send your books to any other publishers?or did little, brown books decide to publish it immediatly?
Hi Anouck – Always read the publisher's (or agent's) submission guidelines and follow them to the letter is the best advice we can give.
hi!
Stephenie please finish Midnight Sun and please write about other books. I'm really curios about Edward's side. How can he leave Bella? or how can stand Jacob when they're waiting for the battle at Eclipse. I'm reaaly crazy about hearing news about Midnight Sun! Thanks to you and your book my life is so enjoyable now:)
Hi!
I just want to BEG you to PLEASE finish writing this book! I MUST tell you a short story. Unfortunately it occured at my Mother's funeral at the funeral home. I am still grieving for her terribly. However, I was SO impressed at my 2 neices! There they were, sitting ever so quietly, reading your books! They are only 13 and 10! It was a VERY LONG day and it was coming to a close, short of a few hours. There they were, the girls, SO content and quiet, happily reading your books! I was SO impressed! They told me they hold your books a special way as they don't want the cover damaged. None of the pages can get bent either. They held the books in such a protective manner! They each took turns explaining to me what books they have read, what books they still need to get. They told me about each book they have read and what they expect the book they are reading now will be about and how they think the plot will play out! They LOVE your books! I have never seen 2 young people like that! They made quite an impression on me and everyone who attended the funeral home that night. It is NOT often you come across two children who can talk about the novel's plot and how they think it will play out. Most kids can tell you what the book is about, but these two explaining how they think the novel's plot will play out?! Wow! I will probably never again know two other young girls at 13 and 10 who gave a book thought enough to guess how a plot will play out! Can you just imagine that whole scenario???!!! Amazing! PLEASE finish this book! They will be devastated, literally, if you don't! How may I make it up to you in order to have you finish writing this next novel so my neices can continue enjoying your work? I would be willing to do anything to correct the situation and I don't even know the person involved! Thank you SO much for what you have done so far, and the spectacular influence you have made on my neices lives. I never would have thought it possible that two little girls would be smart enough to tell me how they think the plot of the story will play out through the novel! Their love for reading, for reading your books, have taught them this! PLEASE continue to be an influence in more live like this!
Stephenie Meyer As an adult that enjoys the Twilight books . I just want to beg you to finish Midnight Sun. The chapter on your web page has only made me want more of the Cullin family.
Will we ever hear what becomes of Jacob and Nessie?? I heard that you were tired of vampires but what about the wolves?
Thank You for your great books.
It has taken me just 9 days to read The Twilight Saga and also Bree's story (and I also work full time too). I so loved the story, full of love, romance and sacrifice irrespective of vampires and shapeshifters – a magical saga. I really hope that, sometime in the not too distant future, Stephenie will decide to write more on the Cullens, Jacob and Nessie and maybe even the Volturi……In the mean time, I do so hope Midnight Sun gets published…..
Stephenie, I really am not sure whether you will get to read this as I am sure thousands of these comments must be written daily but just in case I want to say a very big 'Thank You' for writing these wonderful books. I am 18 years of age in mind but alas nearly 62 in body. I love to read and it has been an absolute pleasure to read your books. My next purchase will be 'The Host'……
Hi, Stephenie. I am a late comer to your "fandom" and I suppose you could say I'm a minority; being a 55 year old male. Nonetheless I have been mesmerised by your Twilight Saga. I've read the first four books at least three times through, have read the Bree Tanner novella and am engulfing the illustrated guide. I am an aspiring writer myself and am researching informaton for a set of novels of my own. Even though these novels have totally different subject material, you have been an inspiration to me in that I feel some confidence in seeing them as a reality. If there was perhaps any suggestions you could give, I would greatly appreciate the advice and be in your debt. I've already gathered a lot of info from your latest book and from your website. Lastly, please don't end the Twilight storyline just yet. You have a rare gift of imagination and a talent to translate it to a story and the story of Edward, Bella and many of your characters has only gone half way, at least. Just as a minor example; a conflict between the"children of the moon" and the Quileute Tribe. I respect your privacy, having rased a family myself, so any correspondence would be strictly kept in confidence.
